Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1929 to John and Margaret Kelly. She and Rainier met for the first time when in May 1955 the French government invited her to the Cannes Film Festival. It was there that Grace was invited to the beautiful pink palace above Monte Carlo for a brief meeting with the Prince. Grace was in Monaco to film the Alfred Hichcock "To Catch a Thief" with Cary Grant. Rainier gave the beautiful Grace a tour of the palace, and showed off his petting zoo by sticking his hand in a tigers cage.
After many letters Ranier came to the United States to visit Grace and her family in Christmas 1955. The couple was engaged on January 5, 1956. Grace and Rainiers civil marriage took place in the Thone Room of the Palace on April 18, 1956. The Religious ceremony took place at the Cathedral of St. Nicolas the following day.
The wedding dress was made of 110 meters of silk and of lace 125-years-old. Grace's veil was embroidered with thousands of pearls.
